In the Lakshmipur Union of Atghoria Upazila, Pabna, under the funding of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), a road construction project is underway from Islampur to Balughata (1.8 km), with contractor Mohammad Sirajul Islam appointed as the subcontractor for the work. However, there have been widespread allegations of corruption and irregularities in the project.

Locals have raised concerns that the contractor has not even put up a signboard for the company, and is using low-quality materials, such as unnumbered bricks and rotten gravel, for the construction of the Islampur-Balughata road. According to the complaints, old bricks from the road were being dug up and reused for construction, and poor quality burnt soil is being used in the section from Keshabpur Bridge to Islam. The locals are dissatisfied with the quality of work and have warned that if the issue is not addressed, they will organize protests and other actions.

When contacted by phone, contractor Sirajul Islam denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the work was proceeding properly and without any corruption. However, he did not specify the name of the contractor or the amount of money allocated for the project. Instead, he mentioned that he had taken the subcontract from another company.

The Atghoria Upazila engineer, Mohammad Baki Billah, when asked about the issue, assured that if a formal complaint is made, action will be taken.

This situation highlights the possibility of corruption, with allegations that Sirajul Islam, the subcontractor, is managing to avoid proper oversight through financial influence. Additionally, his manager allegedly used loudspeakers to attempt to intimidate a journalist who was investigating the matter, indicating the level of corruption and the administrative negligence involved.
